It was late September 2002 when I made a call to a singles "dating" line when Curtis Coleman and I started to chat. It was his voice that made me feel so warm inside. He new just what to say to make me feel wanted. He just finished his tour in Detroit,MI. We decided to drive to a half way point and meet. I got a full tour of his bus, he played some of his music , we chatted among other things. Curtis Coleman became the father of Cheyanne Rayn on July 2, 2003.
It saddens me to think that he has dedicated 12+ years of his life to childrens songs, music, programs and educating them but has turned his back on his own daughter. To think that she may never know him like you all know him, and to think that he has used his illness to cancer as an excuse not to cooperate with the courts to help support what he helped to create.
So even though he is a great friend to you all, he is just another dead beat dad to me!

Come on over on Thursday night the 31st at 8 to Conexus Cathedral (1:00 and Esplanade) and celebrate with them all of the huge things that have happened this year - Beat Cancer (Friends of Curtis-YAY!), Fell In Love, Moved In Together and Opened A Restaurant. Most amazingly though is their insistence on choosing love over fear at every turn. Come by to see if they can continue this streak in the face of having both of their ex-spouses co-officiate the ceremony! Music provided by superstar tween and Christine's daughter, Harper. All of Black Rock City is invited so put down that lube and inflatable giraffe (better yet - bring 'em with you!) and be a part of what makes weddings so sacred. Having their love witnessed by YOU.
Curtis is appearing onstage for the FIRST TIME since being diagnosed and he's playing the music for MY show. I'm Soooo PROUD and HONORED. Last night one of my coaching clients opened his solo show, which I directed (thankyouverymuch) and it was a huge success. Curtis' music and singing is an amazing addition to this wonderful production. He sounds fantastic!
If anyone has ever told you how much they love your stories and the way that you tell them, think about doing one of these shows. They are bona vide life transforming. Come on out tonight and see this one and find out for yourself.

To everyone I know and love,

It has been 6 1/2 months since I was diagnosed with cancer, and the time has now come for me to sit and write a letter to all of you. A letter of Love, Gratitude, and some information about how I am doing now.

For some, this letter may have come sooner than they had expected, and for others, a little late.

But for me, the time is now. Not a minute sooner, not a moment later. To those of you that were wondering, thank you for your concern and infinite patience!

I never thought that my existence here would be terribly important to anyone, I feel so blessed and comforted to have you all in my life. We are all so blessed. What an amazing gift we have been given. Each Other.

I have learned so much in such a short period of time, and am still VERY MUCH "in school", that it seems impossible to tell you everything, but I will try to tell you the things that have been important and life affirming for me in the last several months, and give you an update as to what is happening with me now.

The first thing that I have learned is that if nothing else, a life threatening disease like cancer will get you fucking present, in your body, in the moment, right here right NOW like NOTHING else that I have experienced in this lifetime. Truly amazing. It allowed me to go inward, which is something that I was never very prolific at. Those that know me well, know that I am usually an "outward" kind of guy. It's the performer in me, and one of the millions of masks that I wear to keep myself separate from myself and my usefulness to others. Those that know me REALLY well, know that this kind of contemplation was WAY over due. So that's exactly what I did. I went "inside" as much as I have been able to. I separated myself in order to have a LONG OVERDUE conversation with myself. (We are still talking, by the by. The conversation is getting interesting).

I moved to Atherton shortly before my treatment started, as an Angel just happened to fall into my lap. She is a friend of a friend. A cancer survivor herself. She handed me the keys to her amazingly beautiful home and said, "Here. HEAL!", and then she went to France to live.

I went through my radiation treatment at Stanford every day for almost two months, and at the same time was at Valley Medical Center once a week for chemo. For those of you that want the gory details, yes...it was fairly painful and ugly, but it is amazing how resilient the human spirit is. I was scared first, sick later, and glad it is over now. That's it in a nutshell. The last several months have been about healing. The radiation to my throat was pretty damaging, and has taken a while to recover just normal functions like swallowing, saliva function, taste, etc. It is a VERY slow recovery process, but is getting better everyday. I was on a diet for months of "Ensure", and am now eating some solid food everyday! (MAN the shit I took for granted!). I had my feeding tube removed about 2 months ago and am eating everything by mouth now.

I have lost a LOT of weight. Over 75 pounds, but hey, as Larry told me... "You WERE kind of chubby Curtis, you needed to lose it!" Ahhhhhh.... more blessings.

Now? Well... I am starting to get out and about everyday and it feels really good. I have been "showing up". Fuck! I missed you guys!

How is the Cancer? Gone. GONE.

For now I get tested every few weeks, and hopefully it stays away. I will keep you posted. Call me cured if you want. Call me in "remission". I don't care. Just do me a favor, please? If someone asks you how I am doing? Tell them that the cancer is gone. GONE. And tell them that the power of love did it. Wanna see some magic? You just did. Wanna see a miracle? There it is. Did you see it? I did. Fucking brilliant. And I am grateful beyond measure.

To my Dad, thanks for telling me you were proud of me. You always were, and told me so all the time, but before I couldn't hear it. I was too angry. I wanted things to look differently. They do now. I love you, and NO I will NOT play cribbage with you! :)

To my Mom, NOBODY else is allowed to rub my back while I am throwing up except you. (Sorry everyone?!?!) I loved sitting and painting pictures with you while I couldn't talk. Could we PLEASE do that again sometime? Soon? I would love that.

To Andi, thank you for seeing me. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for being afraid for me. Thank you for holding me while I cried. Thank you for supporting me. Thank you for pushing me harder and harder to stop complaining and get on with it. Thank you for listening to me for endless hours of brutal insane drama nonsense. Thank you for wanting to make love with me when I felt like the ugliest man in the entire world. But most of all, thank you for being my partner through what hopefully is an experience that we will only have had once in this lifetime. A sacred moment, if you will. Thank you, Andi for showing up when I needed you most. I will always love you.

To my brother Glen. Oh boy Oh boy oh boy. We did it this time. Connected even more than we ever have. I have more fondness and genuine care for you than I could have imagined one could have for another. Thank you brother for EVERYTHING!

To Heidi Hi Hi Hi. Thank you for the energy energy energy energy energy energy energy energy. You never had to do a thing for me to see you, and your integrity, and your brilliance. I have adored you since the day we met. Thank you from the bottom of my SOUL for doing everything in your power to make sure I was taken care of. Thank you for Solstinox. Watch closely, Heidi... this one isn't finished being written yet....

To Mary... Thanks for working hard at keeping this friendship... it's been worth it, huh??? The best is yet to come...

HEY KARIE..... I love you! Thanks for being worried, for keeping your eye on the road, and being there for me when I was REALLY sick....now get over here and PICK UP YOUR FUCKING LOTIONS! :)

To Marian... I have searched my whole life for a friend like you. One who doesn't need a thing from the other. The ease in which we have done this dance together is a testament to true loving presence between strangers. WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG? (meow)

To all of you who helped Heidi put on Solstinox.... And to those of you who CAME to Solstinox....., what the FUCK you guys????? That was AMAZING!!! Can we do that EVERY year for someone else each time? Count ME in! It helped me so much in so many ways! Took the heat off financially, helped me to remain strong. But lets face it people, it wasn't about "Curtis". Because you and I both know that as long as we can use our creative energy to benefit something in need, anything, we serve ourselves, and the world around us greatly, in the most profound ways. I am grateful for what you all did for me. Beyond words. But I must say, that if my cancer gave us a reason and permission to start and CONTINUE to serve something OTHER than ourselves? Then it was ALL worth it. I love you guys. Thanks!

To ALL of Burning Silicon, when I moved out here last year, I didn't really know why I had come. I arrived with a loud voice. Some of you embraced me, others felt a bit put off. But when I got scared, you circled the wagons around me, told me I was safe, and showed me the way home. Thank you forever for teaching me about community and family. YAY! Thanks you guys. I love you all.

To my best friend Arthur. Where do I begin. You have been my best friend since we were kids, and I feel like we are just getting started. So much to do, so little time. NOBODY knows me like you, Artie. Sometimes that is an awfully vulnerable place for me to be with you, sometimes I don't like it, but I know you hold it with love. Thank you for helping me along my journey. Thank you for crying your own tears for my terror and fear. Thank you for reaching out to the world for some help and compassion for me, and, inevitably NOT just for me, but for us all. I am HONORED to be called your best friend. You and I made a pact when we were 16 to meet at a pre-described destination when we were 50. I have every intention of being there. I will NOT let you down. I love you Arthur. So much.

And last, but CERTAINLY the most important people of all... To all of those who have called themselves so lovingly, "Friends of Curtis", I want to tell you what happened to me when you were building that tribe... The doctors had given me pretty bad news, and I was not sure that I wanted to, nor had the strength to do all the things they wanted me to do to save my life. Radical neck dissection. Neck muscle removal. Radiation to the throat and mouth. Chemical injection into my blood. All with a strong possibility of dying anyway. I asked the doctors what would happen if I did nothing at all, and they told me I would be dead within 1-2 years. So, I started to look at ALL my options, including suicide. You see, I have never been afraid of dying. But I do NOT want to be sick, in bed, fighting for no reason. So, I went onto the internet, and typed in the search box "painless suicide methods". I came upon a site called the "Church of Euthanasia". I was frightened, alone, and very confused. They listed every form of suicide you can imagine, with the pros and cons. Everything from jumping off of a bridge to 20lb nitrous tanks (my personal fav). Simultaneously, I was getting e-mail after e-mail after e-mail from people I had not ever met before, sending love, hands of friendship, LOTS OF MONEY for my treatment and recovery, concern, love, more love... this amazing well of life force. Juicy, slobbery, fucking sexy ass LOVE! I decided INSTANTLY that I was going to have surgery and treatment, and, everyone who knows me well will tell you that I never talked of my "demise" again. You showed me how to feel like I was really worth something.

You saved my life.

I love you all so deeply for that, that I still cry when I think of what that felt like. My hope is that we will all continue to spread that kind of love around to each other ALL the time, for ANY reason, no matter WHO we are. For me, it's NOT "about the art, stupid". It's about the connection between us. The reflection. The mirror. The love.

The art, the party, the party etc... are just vehicles to get us to find each other, and ourselves. Thank you for teaching me this very valuable lesson. I am honored to be connected in this way to you all.

As far as singing goes... I cannot sing so well these days, but I am trying. My voice will surely be different. That's ok. I am different now too.

As a gift to you all, a song that I wrote as a right of passage some years ago. Put it to whatever music plays in your head, and if you see me on the playa, ask me. I would love to try to sing it for you. :)

DYING FLAME

Here we all sit. Here we remember.
Thinking of times that have come and gone.
And if we can choose to live in the moment,
The memories will fade like the dusk and the dawn.

I came to this place, with some trepidation.
The newness brought fear, in spite of each face.
You held out your arms, and wrapped me inside them.
Your warmth and your love cannot be replaced.

And if we all sing, and raise up our voices,
And try to see clearly the choices remained.
*Todah Adonai, who blows on the embers...
Blow life in this dying flame.

Hugs and Kisses,

Curtis

I spoke with Curtis yesterday.

Here's the best news: the old sparkle, world-class wicked sense of humor, and positive attitude are definitely on their way back.

He still needs to pace himself and conserve his energy, though. If he doesn't return calls or mail right now, he's not ungrateful or dissing you -- he's just resting. Doctor's orders.

Here's the next best news: He just had the feeding tube removed, and is now able to swallow his Ensure without any problems. He can even taste it a little, and we're assuming that's a good sign for getting more of his sense of taste back eventually.

It's still a little early to tell what the state of his salivary glands is going to be, and that's the biggie for determining whether he's going to continue singing professionally. Please send hopes, prayers, positive thoughts, manifestations, etc. etc. to support the healing of Curtis' remaining salivary glands. We've seen a couple of miracles already in this community; we might as well expect a couple more.

Anyway, he's laughing again.

And that rocks.

Hi Solstinoxers, my friend (and boss) Athena Demos is hiring a few people to represent/sell the energy drink ZipFizz in the bay area. We've only got a few guys up there and a lot of Costcos to visit.

Zipfizz has 30 times the electrolytes of a serving of Gatorade, has no sugar or artificial colors/flavors, has 25 vitamins and minerals including the full B complex and 2500 mcg of B12, as well as 500 mg of vitamin C, and typically provides a 4-6 hour energy cycle for one serving. It is quite the perfect playa drink, and happens to be perfect for a "vitamin" supplement when you're feeling warm and fuzzy at a playa party, and is an excellent hangover remedy. Marathon runners, body builders, truck drivers, nurses, teachers, dock workers, construction workers and bartenders are among the kinds of people who SWEAR by Zipfizz. Many forswear coffee and Red Bull forever.

Basically what you do is:

1. Use Zipfizz in your daily life to find out for yourself how cool and effective it is for HEALTHY energy when you need it

2. Go to Costco on weekends, set up a little table, and talk to people about it, share info about nutritional value and personal accounts of how you and people you know use it,

3. Give out lots of samples,

4. Have all the free Zipfizz to keep you going at all those late night breakbeat parties, and when you have to work the next day. You will have enough to supply your friends too, at parties.

You work about 17 hours on a typical weekend, and it's all independent-contracter work. You need to be great with people, portray a healthy lifestyle/look and be energetic, easy to talk to, and able to work with a minimum of supervision.

Hiring IMMEDIATELY. Call Athena Demos at (310) 245-4147.

------

i've just been informed that the truck i was going to borrow for hauling bar/party supplies has been having ignition problems and won't be fixed before the event. i just can't risk being broken down during that weekend, so...

do you or anyone you know have a TRUCK that can be used to pick up/transport the following items?

*MAJOR costco run(s), saturday by 3pm. (costco is right by somarts)

*semi-major smart & final (fart & smile) run, saturday by 4pm.

*MAJOR ice run saturday evening at 6pm (safeway is nearby)

the costco/ice runs run will need more than one truck, or multiple trips. i am compling a few lists for a few different people.

we need SEVERAL trucks w/ drivers.

i AM HAPPY to accompany the costco run, however, if i do that, it MUST be done before 12pm, as i MUST be at SomArts by noon. otherwise, i will supply very clear instructions.

thank you for any leads, feel free to give people my cell # or email.

Hi Curtisians!

The Time Has Come to throw down a major CD Release Party for "For My Friends" and Arthur has graciously encouraged me to launch the effort. Having this event will provide the following:

* Money for Curtis' medical treatment
* Recognition for Curtis' talent and contribution
* Serious Good Love Vibes
* Major Fun
* Knowledge that you were involved with the Coolest CD Release Party Ever.

I am forming a team to make this happen. As I live in SoCal, I'm going to really need your participation and I'm clear that of all the tribes out there, this is the place to find people committed to this!

My vision for this event is that it should happen in February, in either an art gallery, large loft, estate/"house-concert" setting, or a very cool music performance venue. It will go down on a Saturday night that won't be competing with any major SF-area playa underground parties. The environment will be very "Hookah-dome" or warm and cozy, well-lit. We will have decorators for that. Very nice food will be served, and there will be a bar. We will have foodies and bartenders for that. $20 gets you in the door, and sends you home with your own copy of "For My Friends."

There will be a stage, where 5 or 6 performers will perform their favorite songs from "For My Friends." A few speeches will be given to rouse interest and contribution for the Curtis Coleman Medical Fund. Special thrones will be set up for King Curtis and Queen Andi... the best seats in the house, for however long they can be there (health permitting). DJs will keep the appropriate vibe going when live music isn't being performed.

Publicity will occur via email lists; flyers/street team; radio promotion; and special mailed invitations for "must-be-present" people -- perhaps family, school personnel where Curtis has played, etc. The goal should be 200-300 people if there we can find a suitable venue. Even a small venue with 75 people can raise much awareness and money if properly implemented.

Certainly these are my ideas, and your ideas might even be cooler or more feasible. An event like this requires teamwork, and so we will need the following team members (I recall someone else on this tribe mentioned having CD release party experience, yes?):

* Venue-finders
* Green Angels (people to put down money for purchases & door change, money to be returned from gross receipts)
* Publicity Team
* Graphic Designer
* Website Team
* Decorating Team
* Bar Team
* Food Team
* Stage Manager
* CD Sales/Door People
* Basic Worker Bees
* Other Team Members (if you see a place you fit in that's not mentioned above)

No one will be asked to put in more energy than they are able to contribute. That being said, this effort will succeed based on people doing what they say they'll do, and we'll adhere to a "production" schedule to make this happen.

I will create a separate Tribe or Yahoo Group for the team so as not to clutter this particular group and to keep things a surprise! If you are interested, please respond to this thread or send questions to me via my Tribe.net email.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy!!!!

This is going to be AWESOME!

OK, who's in?
The issue I have with this is that the prints are will be hard to display (They are large, sorry I can't say the size right now but ledger or bigger, that vicinity).

Here is the plan....

Find that awesome playa wear that doesn't fit, you're bored with, you decided is not your color, etc. and donate it to the 'Drop the Laundry Bag' for Curtis' raffle auction. Gidget already donated many wonderful items but we need more!

I have a mesh bag and will gentle fold/roll up the clothing items and the bid will be for the entire bag. You will be able to see pieces of each item through the mesh but you won't know what the items are until you win the bid. Is that furry thing a shirt, pants, vest? Who knows? Opening the bag prior to the end of the raffle will not be allowed - I am going to sew it shut.

So get that clean playa wear/jewelry/hats/whatever to me and I will add it to the bag then get it to the event for raffle.

Fun! Fun! Fun! (...is that the new Yay?)
Burning Solstinox: Connections –March 5, 2005 8PM-4AM @ SOMArts, 934 Brannan St in SF
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once a year, on the midpoint between burns when we are farthest in time from any, we come together to celebrate Burning Solstinox - a holiday of hope, rebirth, love and the creative thrill of radical participation, when we experience playa joys in default. This year ’s theme is “Connections ”, and we invite you to create some by making magic with us in an amazing space. Don ’t miss this one; we ’ll be halfway home!

We do this all volunteer, totally non-commercial, and following the 10 Burning Man principles, so radically include yourself and participate. Help create an outrageous evening in a burning village that will keep that rocking playa vibe alive for another six months - there ’s no better way to switch your psyche from its vault of dusty memories to new visions of chaos.

This year ’s event is a FUNraiser benefit for Friends of Curtis, and we ’ve lined up the area ’s best DJ ’s, dazzling lighting, insane lasers, eye-popping visuals, blacklit bars, super cozy chill spaces, and lots of special playa style amusements sure to please all your senses. Plus, a raffle & silent auction for one-of-a-kind burner gifts and experiences, and even free coffee when it ’s time to go! Every bit of it gifted, by burners for burners. All proceeds go directly to saving this burning musician ’s life and voice from cancer (www.friendsofcurtis.com).

$15.93 presale, $20 at the door. There ’s no ATM; bring extra cash for amusements, bar & raffle.
For advance tix and info, visit www.solstinox.com; email participate@solstinox.com to help!

Because some nights are so special they only come once a year …

He is moving to Atherton this weekend to house sit for 3 months so he can be closer to Stanford where he needs to be 5 days a week, and it will probably get lonely. So for the next 5 or 6 weeks while he is undergoing this brutal treatment, I hope you will all do what you can to visit and send good energy. His spirits are still high and we need to keep them there. This is going to be the time you are needed most.

Thanks for the love.

curtis started radiation today at stanford. for the next 7 weeks he'll have radiation 6 days/week, and chemo once a week at valley medical in san jose.

both will be nasty.
both will be ugly.

let's send him lots of warm thoughts and energy throughout this intense time!

i know i don't need to tell all of you how devastated i am that one of my nearest and dearest friends has to go through this shit. sorry about my language, but it is, quite simply, shit.

and i believe all of us are happy to see him start this (most difficult) part of his treatment, as we know it will eventually result in no more cancer cells!, but beneath all of the excitement toward cure, there's a part of me that feels that NO ONE, under ANY circumstances, should have to go through this. it's not going to be pretty, and i'm sad.

i can't even imagine what he and andi are going through. all i can do is believe that the universe (or god, or whatever you wish to call it, i'm not in the least bit picky!!!!!!) has a plan, and that what curtis is going through will ultimately benefit both himself and all whom he encounters in this journey.

meanwhile, in the other "real" world...

the fundraising party is coming together BRILLIANTLY! but we still need a lot of help filling loose ends. any of you wanting to jump on board can do so by contacting Mousetrap and joining the Google group, where the bulk of planning occurs. otherwise, stay tuned HERE for more information on how you can help, coming very, very soon. like in a few days! expect specific contacts for specific jobs that you might happen to be GREAT at. coming soon! i promise!

mousetrap's profile here:
http://sanfrancisco.tribe.net/person/0ef9d8a9-5ae7-46f5-8e3b-b578a5257b42?_click_path=Application%5Btribe%5D.Person%5B0ef9d8a9-5ae7-46f5-8e3b-b578a5257b42%5D&r=10535
to join the google group.

i feel very excited today, but also very, very sad, that my dear friend must suffer so much in order to heal, but if he's taught me anything about life, it's to remain positive, and that good things come to those who bust ass the hardest!

curtis busts hard ass! i love him immensely for it. YAAAAAY!!!

and as i've been writing this, he's just gotten home from his first radiation treatment! and he's smiling and curious about how the party's coming along. he's worried that some of us are overwhlemed! even in his scariest moment, he's concerned about the greater good. everything's going to be just fine.

big huge love, stay tuned, save the date 3/5, and keep the momentum going!!!

On Saturday night March 5th 8PM-4AM, your burning friends from across the Bay will converge at SOMArts in SF to celebrate Burning Solstinox, the mid-point between burns. Do NOT miss this one - we’ll be halfway home!

At last year’s event, 350 of you brought your theme camps, art cars and flamethrowers to rock the Southbay like it has never rocked before. This year, we’re taking it to the City. With 5 weeks to go, it’s time to decide how you’ll participate in the event sure to keep your playa vibe alive until you breathe that magic dust again.

With visions of our psyche’s impending chaos mingling with memories of the vault’s dusty demise, think about how we’ll turn a little piece of default into a little piece of playa to remind us all of who and what we are. Our theme this year is “Connections” and we invite you to create some by coming together with us to do amazing things.

We’ll do this all-volunteer, totally non-commercial, and following the 10 Burning Man principles especially radical inclusion. Sure, there will be live music, DJs, blacklights and bling bling, but so much more. This will be a FUN-raiser with 100% of proceeds going to benefit the Friends of Curtis fund that is working to save an awesome burning musician’s life and voice from cancer (www.friendsofcurtis.com). The growing list of FUN-raising stations already includes Captain Erotica’s famous erotic ice bar and lots of radically fun experiences usually available only on the playa. Raffle & auction items will include the most amazing custom playa coat you could ever dream of, but we want more...

We want YOU – we want you involved way beyond dressing up, bringing cash, and dancing till dawn. We invite you to actively participate in creating amazing experiences for others by donating something creative to auction, or performing, or bringing your art, fire toys, art car, or theme camp, or volunteering for a shift on one of the event teams, or whatever it is your wickedly creative mind can imagine. The connections you make participating creatively will change lives forever.

Are you ready to spend an enchanted evening in a rocking Black Rock village without waiting another six months for the magic? Join us to make it happen! Curtis even has a most awesome playa gift waiting for every participant.

Please contact positive2964@yahoo.com to help create another unbelievable Solstinox event, and save the date, 3/5. Stay tuned in a week or so for the ticket announcement with everything you need to know about prices, ordering, place, time, address, and other such. Ciao for now, from the Coalition.

Hello Our Dearest Friends,

I wanted to give you some updates regarding Curtis’ treatment. Curtis is healing well from his surgery as most of you know. He’s up and about, eating and sleeping as most of us do. He is in good spirits and easing up on the drugs substantially. He occasionally complains about pain in his neck, throat and chest, but the pain is not nearly as great as it once was. He is starting to get some feeling back in his jaw and neck. Curtis has gotten his dental work out of the way in preparation for the radiation treatments- radiation to the neck will cause his salivary glands not to produce saliva, which in turn puts his teeth in jeopardy of rapid decay. All patients undergoing radiation get their teeth cleaned and sparkly beforehand.
In addition to the radiation that was expected, he is now faced with doing chemotherapy at the same time. The chemotherapy is a 5 hour process once a week during the full 7 weeks of his radiation. Radiation is every day, 5 days a week. Side effects for these aggressive treatments include nausea, dizziness, sweats, extreme fatigue, other flu-like symptoms, and loss or thinning of hair. The most uncomfortable side effect will be the sunburn and scaling of his neck skin and throat. Ever run your fingernails over sunburn? That’s how it going to feel for him to even swallow water. Needless to say, he is going to be one hurting pup. And what’s more, the side effects could last for 3 weeks to a month after the therapy is over.
Curtis goes in to get his feeding tube installed tomorrow, Wednesday. We will be there at 7am and he will be staying overnight at the hospital for recovery. His release is expected around noon on Thursday. The feeding tube is essential for keeping him alive and fed during the course of his treatments. Water, soup, Ensure… whatever will sustain him will be poured directly into his stomach to keep him nourished.
The most recent struggles for Curtis have been in selecting a medical facility that has the latest and greatest radiation therapy. The top of the line software run on the machines is not available at Santa Clara Valley Medical, which is where he will be doing the chemo treatments. Hence, he’s on the active and fast search for another healthcare facility. We are really hoping it is Stanford, as a highly recommended and internationally renowned radiologist works there. It is extremely important that Curtis use this newest technology and best doctors in helping him maintain his salivary glands and vocal cords. We are praying that with this approach, his salivary glands will come back working within a much shorter time, and that his vocal cords (which are not directly infected by the cancer) are protected in the process.
As he is going outside of Santa Clara Valley, money continues to be important. His radiation will be coming out of pocket at the minimum cost of $40K. That means he needs more money! Please keep spreading the word about our fundraising efforts. We are receiving checks at the house as well as donations through Paypal. We are also selling CDs--- if you haven’t bought one yet, you may consider doing it NOW. The music is stellar—so heartfelt and true. And they make great gifts! :) Paypal contributions and CD orders can be placed by visiting www.friendsofcurtis.com. If you'd like our address, just ask me.
On a side note and to make matters more challenging, I just got laid off from my job yesterday. I’m going to be taking this new found time and rediscovering myself. I’ll be spending time at the house, updating my resume in my search for a job, and spending time outside of the house, visiting with friends, getting errands run and responsibilities met. As the treatment and healing goes on, we will continue to welcome folks to come and visit. Help out if you can by bringing meals, books, movies… maybe even helping out around the house… whatever you want to share, if nothing more then your company! Curtis and I both appreciate your visits.
That’s about it for now. Just keep those healing vibes and financial contributions coming. Particularly now, he (and we) need support. We love you all very much, and continue to be very proud and happy to be a part of this community.
Love,
NastiAndi

Help Save Curtis Coleman's Life!

A letter from Arthur:

Dear Friends,

My best friend is dying, I'm sad as hell, and I'm asking for your help. Now is the time to show that community and connections mean a lot more than just bopping around at late-night parties together.

My friend's name is Curtis Coleman. He gives a lot to the world, and we desperately need what he gives. Last year, he was the nation's most popular elementary school entertainer, reaching tens of thousands of young kids through song to teach them about safety, public spirit, and most importantly, that they have a voice. We need our children to find their voice.

Curtis now has no voice, fighting an aggressive cancer in his throat called squamous cell carcinoma. Soon Curtis will have neck dissection surgery, plus aggressive radiation & chemo. On paper his chances of survival are less than 1 in 4, but cancer victims facing far worse odds have been miraculously cured when enough people came together to make it happen. We do amazing things together within our respective families, so please, please participate in saving Curtis' life and prove we can do amazing things together within our community.

So many of you know Curtis, are stunned by this news, and have already asked how you can help. Some of Curtis' closest friends have put together a plan of action we hope everyone connected to Curtis in any way will participate in. We need three things immediately for Curtis: money, time, and love.

Money: Curtis has no insurance, and the most promising medical treatments aren't covered by the county's last resort coverage. If everyone that sees this gives up a couple lattes and contributes at least $10 or more if you can, we'll be on our way to giving Curtis the best chance possible at life. Please help as much as you can RIGHT NOW by using Paypal. the long link is after this paragraph. If it doesn't work go to www.Paypal.com and enter account number friendsofcurtis@yahoo.com. Or, send a check to 1142 Garfield Ave, San Jose CA 95125. All donations will go to the Friends of Curtis Foundation.

Paypal link: www.paypal.com/xclick/bus...s=friendsofcurtis%40yahoo.com&item_name=Friends+of+Curtis&cn=Note+To+Curtis%3A&tax=0??cy_code=USD&lc=US

Time: Curtis' girlfriend Andi needs help to cope with the huge burden of caring for Curtis over the months to come. If you can help with time for finding treatments, delivering an anti-cancer diet, transportation, lots of social visits, a mailing list, or even household tasks like mowing the lawn it would be tremendously helpful. Contact FriendsOfCurtis@yahoo.com and you'll find out that when you reach your hand out to someone that needs it, your hand never comes back empty.

Love: Whether or not you can help with time or money, you can help with love in so many ways. Visualize the tumors melting away into nothing, and a healthy Curtis making hundreds of kids a day laugh and learn again with his unique talent and beautiful voice. Put Curtis in your prayer circles, or your altars, or whatever connects your energy to the universe. Radiation is powerful medicine, but the love force of many can change the world. Help change the world now through one man that has touched so many of us and our children.

Ok, right now, just do it! Send at least $10, figure out how else you can help, and send a prayer. Then please forward this letter to everyone in your tribe and email lists with a personal note about how you are connected to Curtis, and ask them to participate in supporting my lifelong friend. Stand up for what is good in the world by asking everyone you know to help. Check out www.FriendsOfCurtis.com that will be set up soon. And thank you for the love. We are all in this together, and grateful for your help.

I am planning a visit for mid- or late–January to hang with some of my Bay-Area peeps, (INCLUDING CURTIS & CO.) and really wish to get in some sort of performance while I'm up there (I'm a singer-songwriter/guitarist). This would be in addition, of course, to the private concert I will give to Curtis (if they're up for it), Andi and anyone the invite!

Any recommendations as to a really cool place where I might be able to get to set up and play a some music and invite y'all to come and be entertained and touched?

I am also planning a tour for March/April and would like to get some good leads on some venues/house concerts/etc. that would be good to perform at.

Imagine that to live, one week from now you had to risk losing forever your ability to express artistically. What would you do?

One man created a unique and beautiful gift you can give your friends & family this Christmas that ’s about art, and community, and life itself for a burner many of us love …

Last month, Singer/songwriter/performer Curtis Coleman was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. Facing high odds that he might never sing again after treatment, we booked a last-minute recording studio slot the day after Thanksgiving to preserve his beautiful talent. Curtis laid 16 songs down in five hours, many in one take with some additional guitar overdubs, and some ad-libbed. The CD was mixed & mastered the next day, and we named it “For My Friends ”because of all the love from this community that has supported Curtis. He underwent neck dissection surgery just days later, with aggressive radiation therapy to come.

The music is beautiful and Curtis wants to be as self-sufficient as possible in raising money for his ongoing treatment, so we are pressing 1,000 copies of this special gift from Curtis as a fundraiser. We’re asking for a $15 donation for each one including US mail (or whatever you can afford), or $25 for two so you can have one to enjoy and one to give somebody. You can hear a track or two and order the CD now at www.friendsofcurtis.com.

‘For My Friends ’is being published ridiculously fast by an ad-hoc team of burners with zero recording industry experience, some of whom did not know each other or Curtis previously. I accept all blame for any fuck-ups. Special thanks to HeidiWD for creating rockin ’cool cover art. All proceeds from this CD go to the non-profit Friends of Curtis Foundation in order to support Curtis through treatment and what we pray is a complete recovery. Despite the fully volunteer nature of this CD the cost of recording, duplicating, and sending them out ends up around $4 each, fyi.

We expect to start shipping by Wednesday 12/22 so orders may not arrive quite in time for Christmas. If you really need to put something in the stocking, please visit the image gallery at friendsofcurtis.tribe.net/ for images of the CD art that you can print and turn into a virtual CD using scissors, tape, and simple Origami techniques …you’ll surely be thanked before the recipient even hears the music.

We love you and thank you for all of your support. And I am sure you will love the music.

Then in December I had my second surgery for squamous cell carcinoma located on my lower lip where I lost a 1/2 inch of my lower lip and also had a second biopsy of my neck surgery area. The biopsy came back positive for squamous cell carcinoma. And was schuled for my third surgery on Feb. 3rd 2004 this surgery they took all my right side sterncleidmastoid muscle as well as the spinal accessory nerve. Since Aug. 2003 I have had 11 surgeries 4 of them have been major and I dont have anymore surgeries schuled yet everything seems to have been removed, So I would like to offer any support Curtis.

Hello dear friends. I'm taking a small break from the hospital schedule to send a quick note. Curtis continues to do well today, though he did overdo it yesterday with activity and too much talking (this guy cannot stay quiet!) :) I am happy to report that he has been getting what appears to be his first somewhat good rest today. He has had a couple of very uncomfortable and totally sleepless nights, but he was dozing on and off this afternoon. Although the drugs help, his rest is really really important in the recovery process. If you do choose to visit at the hospital, please be courtesy of the noise levels. I still encourage people to wait to visit him once he gets home and has had the chance to recover a bit more. It's so easy for him to overdo it- he's so excited to see you all! I expect he will not be home until at the earliest Monday.

Thank you all for your continued love and encouragement. I personally am also receiving some huge support from friends that I'm so very very grateful for. Thanks in particular to the lovely Vendetta, who took the time to cut a rose, bring me food (twice!), and warm a lovely lavendar pillow she gifted to me for my rest. Unfortunately, I've fallen ill with a cold, and she's been amazing in helping me. Thanks also to Di, who just called today to offer to drop off some food to the house tomorrow. You both are awesome invaluable women, totally great in helpiing me! :)

I'll write here as often as I can with updates, but as with everything, I'm severely behind in my tasks. I'll keep asking our kind friends like Arthur and Heidi to help with the updates.
God bless you all for your love and friendship. You are an absolutely incredible community that never ceases to amaze me.
Keep up the wonderful thoughts and positive energy. For Curtis, for me, I can tell you it is definately working!! Love to you all.

We went to First Friday in San Jose, and I met some of those wonderful people! Saturday we went to the hospital to visit Curtis, and I met NastiAndi too. (((hugs))) Curtis gave me a brilliant smile, when it was clarified, this is "Naughty Nurse Marsha". He said " I *KNOW* You!" With that naughty look in his eyes. He was doing really well then, I know he was tired and in pain, & it was wonderful to meet him.

Hi Friends,

I would like to find more assistance to create the friendsofcurtis.com web site.

In addition to collecting content, creating the site, and maintaining it, I hope someone can help by looking into the tools paypal offers for selling from a web site (buy now button, shopping cart, etc) so we can prepare a page for processing orders for the Curtis CD.

Also, if there is a way to have paypal automatically issue a receipt to someone making a payment, we need to figure out how to make that receipt look like a charitable donation acknowledgement so as soon as the foundation is formalized people can take write-offs for their donations.

Basically I think there is some creative/web page work here, as well as some business process engineering/programming work, with the programming minimal since tools like "buy now" buttons seem to be provided as html snippets.

So far Tanya of the mrrp mrrps in Portland has offered to assist beginning next week, but I don't want to bury her and I would love to get the business process stuff figured out in the meantime.

He's been doing them both to me for almost 30 years goddamn it!

Now there's going to be a way he can keep doing that for everyone, because today we went to a recording studio where he laid down voice & guitar tracks for about a dozen wonderful tunes. We're going to run off a few hundred CDs of the rough mix right away for fundraising, and I can't wait for you ALL to hear these songs, because the man is a genius.

Anyway, Curtis and Andi are pretty maxed so I get to be executive producer, and since I've never made a record, I could sure use a little help!!! I know I need someone to do sleeve/cover art and a CD label, and someone to pull together the credits, songlist, and other copy for it. Someone to organize duplication & fullfilment would be great to have on-board too! And if there are any PR types out there that want to help spread the word via the media, we talk about self-sufficency, but how many people have ever cut their own benefit album a week after being diagnosed with cancer in their neck?

I'd like to call the CD "This Is My Voice" in honor of Curtis' "I have a voice" work with Children. But if Curtis or anyone else has a better idea I am not wedded to anything here. It would be great to get it done within a couple weeks because this would be one sweet holiday present to give or receive, and we want to sell as many as we can to help Curtis. So, if you can help produce this thing in a jiffy, please do get in touch with me!

Thanks for all the love everyone. This CD will be a gift from Curtis and for Curtis that I know we will appreciate always.

Curtis is being smart in asking the doctors questions and asking about new treatments and exploring all his options.

Sorry I can't link to the article - I have the paper but not an online subscription. It looks like I'll be able to link to it later after it's not so new. But I wanted to metion it in case anyone wants to read it today in the paper.
I say, let's put on a benefit concert for Curtis. I will gladly perform and help with the planning and coordination. Let's make some music, have some fun, and help and honor Curtis. We could probably coordinate with MusicCares, as their purpose is to help people like Curtis. I am a Recording Academy member and would be happy to approach them or help in any way I can.
